Cleft lip and palate still has high prevalence in Indonesia. In some areas this case is still not optimally dealt with, related to costs and unequally access to health care provider.
Answering this problem, on September 13th – 16th, 2018, a charity program for cleft lip and palate surgery was held in Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara. The event was held in Kota Bima Hospital, Jl. Langsat, Bima City is sponsored by Kemenristek DIKTI, Seribu Cinta Foundation (YSC), PHC Hospital and NTB Bank
In collaboration with the governments of Kabupaten Bima, Bima City Hospital, and Indonesian Dental Association Bima-Dompu branch, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga managed to do surgical correction a total of 20 patients, consisting of 9 patients for closure of the cleft palate (palatorahy), 9 patients for closure of the cleft lip (labioplasty), 2 patients for revision of the cleft lip (secondary labioplasty).
Described by the Chairwoman of the Study Program of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Ni Putu Mira Sumarta, drg., Sp.BM (K), team’s departure was carried out on several waves. This humanitarian activity involved senior staff of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departement of Faculty of Dental Medicine-UniversitasAirlangga, residents of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialist program, residents of General Surgery program, Anesthesiologyst, residents of Anesthesiology and Reanimation specialists program, Anesthesia nurses and senior Hospital staff affiliated to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
In the series of events was conducted, including preparation survey of Bima Hospital patient’s abnormality, general condition, and laboratory work up, operation and post operative treatment and suture removal. Mira continued that there was a big hope that similar activities would still need to be done given the high number of cases.
