ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

In Dental Public Health Department, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, the focus of public health services on the concept is emphasizes the efforts of community empowerment that is significantly more promotive, preventive and protective in order to reduce the frequency of dental and oral diseases by protecting or by creating regulations or programs that support efforts health as a whole / systemic (building heathy public policy). Constructing efforts with the target of this society, among others, by empowering the community to change from inside the community in responding and overcoming a health problem in order both to combat infectious diseases, as well as to reduce the rate of non-communicable diseases.

We are the contributors of a research-based community empowerment scheme in the Dental Public Health Department, (IKGM) Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga. Many of our innovative and comprehensive steps do not just happen, there’s always a precursor process that is the subject of evaluation and a foothold for our growth. As well as the results of prior research, cross-sectoral cooperation that has been implemented, as well as support of stakeholders are interwoven until now. Currently, the driving force of almost all  of business departments, even some of our faculty functions, is a system that is driven and  implemented by our typical research-based empowerment of Dental Public Health Department, as evidenced by particular steps of our successions in this portfolio.

Dental Public Health Department Community Empowerment 2018 

  • “DESIGNING DENTAL HEALTH SURVEILLANCE INFORMATION SYSTEM OF SURABAYA CITY
    • The preparation, training, and mentoring of Dental and Oral Health Surveillance Information System based on application. Information system with input in the form of general medical record and dental health, as well as output of descriptive analysis and analytic of dental and oral health along with risk factors related to promotive and preventive efforts. Integrated with Dental Public Health Department Research Framework 2018 and Dental Public Health Department School Teacher Dental Competences Certification Activities
  • “TRAINING AND EMPOWERING SCHOOL TEACHER THROUGH DENTAL HEALTH PROMOTER CERTIFICATION”
    • Routine training with seminar and workshop method within 6 months. including the standardized curriculum, adapting the Yogo Teacher Concept from Hiroshima University. Certification is done upon graduation in the Dental Health Programme Companion Teacher Certification Exam. Integrated with Dental Public Health Department Research Framework 2018 and Dental Public Health Department Research Framework 2018.

Program Overview

This program provides opportunities for students to develop their self as much as possible by giving exposure to the community. There are 6 stages of programs: 1) collecting epidemiologycal data, 2) cause-effect analysis to create empowerment programs, 3) advocacy to stake holder to support the program, 4) implementation of integrated program involving stake holders and community concerned, 5) program evaluation to get a feedback, and, 6) planning new innovative programs based on program evaluation.

Field of Study

Dental health care management, epidemiology, biostatistic, research method, control and prevention of oral and dental diseases, planning and evaluation for oral health, and social and behavioural sciences as applied to dentistry.

Goals

  1. Creating student long-life learning on community empowerment in real community setting.
  2. Obtaining epidemiological data from the community to design innovative empowerment programs and publications.
  3. Empowering stake holders with an integrated approach.

Program Schedule

The program will run two times each calendar year. First session from June to August, and Second Session from December to February. The exact date is negotiable.

Length of Program

It is 6-weeks full-time program, equivalent to 48 hours or 3 credits.

Status of Preceptors

Undergraduate students majoring in Dentistry or Dental Hygienist from Universitas Airlangga and Foreign University.

Subspecialty Areas Offered for Preceptorship

  1. Observing and analyzing primary and secondary findings (health data), both independently and jointly with stakeholders
  2. Data processing to become a logical, systematic and verification description so that an epidemiology-based program can be produced.
  3. Designing, conduct, learn advocacy and negotiate, and evaluate community empowerment programs, both individually and in groups, organized in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

RESEARCH FRAMEWORK

The featured researches of department are dental health epidemiology, human behavior and dental health promotion as well as management of dental services.

Dental Public Health Department Research Framework 2018:

“DENTAL HEALTH STATUS ANALYSIS OF COMMUNITY-BASED IN SURABAYA BASED ON WHO STANDARDS FOR SUPPORTING INDONESIAN FRAMEWORK SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (INA-SDGs)”

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals with 169 measurable achievements and deadlines set by the United Nations as a global development agenda for the benefit of humans and the planet Earth.
The State of Indonesia as one of the member states of the United Nations which plays an active role in the determination of TPB targets as stated in Transforming Our World document: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
To fulfill the government’s commitment to achieve the achievement of SDGs, the Government of Indonesia subsequently perpetrated the abuses with the National Long Term Development Plan and Medium-Term National Development Plan, implemented through Presidential Decree (PERPRES) no. 59 of 2017 on SDGs.
