Get To Know The Oral Disease Commonly Discovered On Elderly Population
Nowadays elderly population (>60-year-old) has become a main concern of the Surabaya City government to provides them a proper health facilities to improve their quality of life. To support this program, Department of Oral Medicine and Oral Medicine Specialist Programme Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga invites the citizens of Surabaya to join the Talk Show placed in Grand City Exhibition Hall on August 14th 2019 themed “Get To Know The Oral Disease Commonly Discovered On Elderly Population” to get information and be educated about this case. The chairman of the committee of this Talk Show is Fatma Yasmin Mahdani, drg., M.Kes cooperating with Surabaya Great Expo 2019 and PT. Debindo Mitra Tama.
The first common disease that discovered in elderly person is xerostomia or dry mouth. Dry mouth occurred as a result of the reduced production from salivary glands. The primary causes of dry mouth are; patients with systemic disease such as diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, medications, sjorgen syndrome, alcoholic and active smoker person and patients undergoing a radiotherapy.
Secondly on the topic is angular cheilitis or some kind of reddish scar on the corner of the lips. The patients with angular cheilitis may complain about the pain, itchy and burning sensation on their corners of the lips. Angular cheilitis takes place as the result of nutrition deficiency, imprecise of dentures vertical dimension, bacterial and fungal infection. The last topic is burning mouth syndrome (BMS), the patients may experience burning sensation, pain and numbness on their mouth.
At the end of discussion the team from Department of Oral Medicine and Oral Medicine Specialist Programme gives some advice for the participants especially the elderly person to keep their oral cavity always in a health condition, eat healthy with more vitamins and minerals intake, get examined by dentist regularly at least once in 6 months to support and improve the quality of life on elderly population.
