PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
The undergraduate/bachelor’s degree in dental medicine in the Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga is offered at both the academic and professional level. The general objectives of the programme are in compliance with the decree of the Indonesian Council of Medicine published in 2015. This decree rules about the Indonesian Standard of Competence for Dentists. The standard serves as the guidelines of the skills and competences obligatory for dentists performing dental health services in Indonesia.
In 2007, the Dentistry Programme of Universitas Airlangga implemented the 2007/2008 curriculum. In this curriculum, there is a change in the education stages. In previous years, there was no separation between the undergraduate and profession programme. Starting in 2007, the dental education is separated into two stages: the dental medical education that has 144 credits and the dental profession education that has 33 credits. Therefore, the total credits taken to become a dentist are 177 credits. These credits can commonly be earned in ten semesters.
In 2014, the new 2014/2015 curriculum began to be implemented. This curriculum brings the changes to a period of the Dentistry Education into seven Semesters and the Profession into four Semesters. Therefore, the total credits to become a dentist is now 184 credits.
The international undergraduate programme (IUP) in Dental Medicine is supported by modern information technology learning facilities. The Profession Education is implemented by a Hospital-Based Work Practice method which is supported by excellent practice facilities in the Dental Hospital Universitas Airlangga (RSGM Universitas Airlangga). The graduates of Dentistry Programme (the Undergraduate and Profession Programme) are expected to play roles as a) Care provider, b) Decision-Maker, c) Communicator, d) Community Leader, E) Manager, f) Researcher, g) Creator and Innovator.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
Courses in this programme are generally designed to achieve the following objectives:
- Able to understand the basic principles and applied basic medical science and basic social science to support dentistry
- Able to apply basic medical science, clinical medicine, basic dental science, and clinical dental science to solve problems on dental cases.
- Able to demonstrate general physical examination snd stomatognathic system examination, establishing diagnosis, and formulating treatment plants in order to achieve excellent oral and healtch through promotive actions, preventive actions, curative actions, and rehabilitative actions towards mannequin or simulation patient.
- Able to perform dental research as the application of scientific methods and disseminate the results according to the rules of science.
- Able to perform general physical examination and stomatognathic system examination, establishing diagnosis, and formulating treatment plants in order to achieve excellent oral and health through promotive actions, preventive actions, curative actions, and rehabilitative actions towards a patient.
- Able to perform procedures and a series of steps to res restore the function of the stomatognathic system in the dental hospital.
- Able to demonstrate procedural knowledge and steps series to restore the function of stomatognathic system in enviromental community.
- Able to perform dental practices based on relevant areas of expertise, accountability principles, partnership, ethic and law.
INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE
Short term programme
Students will spend 10 days at host-university during the autumn season. By joining this program students will learn the importance of mutual understanding, multicultural community and experience harmonious coexistence. Students will have some public lectures, hospital and laboratory visits as well as experience some cultural activities and international interaction with Japanese and other foreign students. At the end of this program, students will receive a certificate of participation in the programme.

Student exchange programme
The student exchange six-month programme is in collaboration with Hiroshima University based on our exchange agreements. This programme will be an opportunity for students to study at the School of Dentistry at Hiroshima University for sixth months and besides taking part in the dental curriculum, they will learn about Japanese culture during their stay as well. At the end of this program, students will receive a transcript and certificate of completion of the programme.
International Dental Course (IDC) programme
This is a program that overseas dental students learn specialized curriculum with Japanese students in Hiroshima University School of Dentistry. The establishment of International Dental Course (IDC) aims to found the basis to educate prospective students capable of taking leadership in Asia, as well as to foster persons with the international way of thinking and global understanding through the international exchange at the undergraduate level. IDC program is also aimed to build international collaborations in dental education and research, maintain the sustainability of scientific communication, student exchange and joint degree through the collaboration in research, education, and community empowerment.

I am getting more interested in this field. Moreover, I got a chance to study dentistry in Japan. From 2011 until 2015, I participated in International Dental Course, a program that gives an opportunity for students to complete the undergraduate study in Hiroshima University, Japan. This program implements a dual linguistic concept, in which all the lectures are given in both English and Japanese. In the final year of my program, I conducted a scientific research about micro-RNA in the bone, as part of my final thesis. By joining that program, I have learnt a lot of knowledge in dentistry, especially in developed country like Japan. Furthermore, I also had a chance to meet many friends from different countries, expanding my networks, and also experience the Japanese cultures. I feel so lucky to join that program. At the moment, I am doing professional program in dentistry in Universitas Airlangga Dental Hospital. I hope I could gain my skill and implement my knowledge as a professional dentist in the future.

The opportunity came when I had completed the first year at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. Four years of study at Hiroshima University, Japan, was a memorable experience. Together with friends from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), and the University of Health Science (Cambodia), I joined International Dental Course (IDC), which means completing the Bachelor Program in Dentistry at Hiroshima University, then returned to each country of origin to complete the professional program of dentistry. As the first batch of the program, we were given the mandate, because the success and sustainability of the program primarily depended on us. Meeting great people keep me motivated to achieve a dream and keep dreaming.
